November 2010

We have met quite a few animals during our walks in the Jura. Here is a sample of the pictures we have taken:

fourmilière
The ants
: in the Jura, you can find 7 different types of ants ( 4 of which are endangered). The Jura is home to the 2nd biggest ants super colony, organized to conquer! 1200 ant-hills over 70 hectares with a 100 kms of tunnels and more than 200 millions animals who, we think, all recognize each other
If you want more information on ants: http://insects.about.com/od/antsbeeswasps/tp/all-kinds-of-ants.htm. After you finish reading about ants, you will feel bad about squishing the little one running on your leg during a picnic!

hérisson
The hedgehog: is protected in Switzerland. In the wild, a hedgehog lives for a maximum of 2 to 3 years. He is very resistant to venoms and can be stung by a scorpio without even getting ill! Some people keep hedgehogs as pets and even give them little toys (a cat ball for example). But this is not allowed in Switzerland. However, you are encouraged to build shelters for them in winter without keeping them in a cage. If they don't come or don't stay, it means they don't like that shelter.
In our region, hedgehogs often come and eat from cat bowls left outside. Apparently, there is now an obesity problem with hedgehogs who love food !

hermine
The stoat: she was taking a stroll with her babies and we took a real long look at them. We kept silent and quiet. In the summer, she is brown and in the winter, she is white with a black tail, for mimetism and camouflage. She eats rodents, rabbits and birds. She is protected in Switzerland but not in France.
rongeur
Unidentified rodent: there are many of them up in the mountain and dig tunnels in the snow in winter, thinking maybe that they are underground. When the snow starts melting, you can see all these crumbling passages and these poor rodents don't understand what has happened of their tunnels... The one of the picture was trying to hide in a rock.
dog
Lola: not at all a wild aninal but she is so cute!! She always comes with us when we walk in the mountains.
Golden Retrievers weigh 300g at birth and 30 kgs when they are fully grown. They multiply their birth weight by 100. For a human being, that would mean a weight of 300 to 350 kgs at the age of 18 !
