Too many gifted children fail at school. It would seem like some of them do not adapt to the regular teaching methods.
In the Swiss system, 50% do not pass Maturité (IB) and too many are sent to lower level classes at the end of the 6th grade.
They fail school because they can't adapt to the usual learning methods and, also sometimes, because they suffer from learning difficulties which were not detected early enough. Their intellectual abilities allow them to continue undetected by the teachers.
For instance, they have a strong memory and can hide their dyslexia for a long time. If 3 children have read the same text outloud before them, they know it by heart. When their turn comes, they just recite and the teacher assumes they read well.
In a linear teaching method, the children learn step by step and new topics are introduced gradually and logically.
Gifted children usually do not need to hear the same explanation several times to master the subject. They are therefore often bored at school because the teacher works in a way that suits the vast majority of pupils.
The gifted individual (child or adult) strongly prefers the arborescent way of thinking and learning.
